For Clients Who Want Everything
I-Tip extensions — also called cold-fusion or microlink extensions — represent the most movement-forward, follicle-conscious method in precision hair extension artistry. Where K-Tip bonds use heat to fuse a keratin polymer around the natural hair strand, I-Tip extensions use a tiny, silicone-lined micro-bead — no heat, no adhesive, no chemical bond — clamped with gentle, calibrated pressure around a small section of your natural hair.
The result is extraordinary: a strand of premium Remy hair that moves completely independently of every strand around it, creating a volume and fluidity that is indistinguishable from natural growth. For clients with an active lifestyle, a love of variety in styling, or a sensitivity to heat near the scalp, I-Tip with microlinks is the method Maete Kenea most frequently champions.
At Holistic Crowns, the I-Tip installation is a deliberate, artisan process. Every bead placement is mapped against your natural density, your growth pattern, and your vision — ensuring a seamless blend that holds through every workout, swim session, and sleek updo.
The Installation Process
Every I-Tip installation at Holistic Crowns follows a precise, health-first protocol developed over 26 years of expertise.
Scalp & Density Assessment
Before any strand is touched, Maete performs a thorough scalp health evaluation — examining density, porosity, growth direction, and any areas of historical tension or thinning. This informs every bead placement decision that follows.
Strand-by-Strand Color Matching
Using natural light and color-mapping techniques, the perfect weight and tone of I-Tip hair is selected for your crown. Holistic Crowns never matches from a catalog — the hair is held against your natural strands until the visual integration is flawless.
Tension-Free Bead Placement
A silicone-lined nano bead — chosen for your hair's diameter — is threaded onto a small, clean section of your natural hair. The I-Tip extension strand is inserted through the bead and clamped at precisely the right pressure: secure enough to never slip, light enough to never stress the follicle.
Full Mapping & Layering
Beads are placed in a strategic grid pattern across the install zone, distributing weight evenly and ensuring no single follicle bears undue load. Each row is layered so upper rows of natural hair conceal every bead point — achieving a fully undetectable result from above.
Style & Aftercare Education
The final step is Maete's favourite: styling your finished crown and walking you through your personalised at-home maintenance protocol. You leave with not just beautiful hair, but the knowledge to keep it that way.
Which Microlink Is Right for You?
The bead Maete selects is dictated by your natural hair's diameter, porosity, and the desired weight of the extension. No two clients use the exact same bead.
Nano Ring
The smallest, most discreet bead available — designed for clients with very fine or thin natural hair. Nano rings distribute extension weight across a larger number of points, minimising load per follicle and delivering maximum comfort.
Micro Ring
The industry-standard microlink bead, used for medium-density natural hair. Silicone-lined to prevent slippage and protect the hair shaft from the bead's metal edge — a critical detail that separates professional-grade installation from amateur technique.
Flat Track Weft Bead
For clients seeking higher volume along a row rather than individual strand placement, flat-track microlink beads allow weft attachment without any sewing or adhesive — combining the volume of a weft with the zero-heat ethos of the microlink method.
How I-Tip Compares to
Other Methods
Making the right choice for your hair begins with understanding the differences. Maete walks every client through this comparison during consultation — because the best method is always the one aligned with your hair's specific needs.

Scalp Integrity
at Every Step
The microlink method, when performed without expert precision, can create pressure points on the scalp that restrict blood flow to the follicle over time. This is the version of I-Tip extensions that gives the method an undeserved poor reputation — and it is something Maete Kenea has dedicated her career to preventing.
At Holistic Crowns, every bead is placed at a minimum of 0.5cm from the scalp, with pressure calibrated using professional-grade pliers checked and recalibrated at the start of every service. The silicone lining in every bead we use provides a buffer between the metal and your hair shaft — protecting the cuticle layer and preventing mechanical damage at the point of contact.
Every 4–6 weeks, Maete recommends a scalp oil treatment — applied directly to the scalp beneath the extensions — to maintain follicle nourishment and healthy sebum distribution throughout the wear cycle. This is the Holistic difference: we think about your hair even between appointments.
"The install was flawless and so lightweight that I literally forgot I had extensions in. It blends perfectly with my texture and the movement is unreal."— Keisha D., I-Tip Microlink Client at Holistic Crowns
