Ritual FAQ

12+ questions about longevity, swimming, damage prevention, method selection, and the science behind the Holistic Crowns approach — answered by Maete Kenea.

01

Extension Longevity

How long do hair extensions last?

+

The longevity of your extensions depends significantly on the method chosen and how rigorously you follow your at-home maintenance protocol. As a general guide:

  • K-Tip Keratin Bond Extensions: 4–6 months between maintenance appointments. Bonds may be reinstalled on the same hair 2–3 times, making them one of the most cost-effective long-term methods.
  • I-Tip Microlink Extensions: 3–5 months between maintenance. The micro-bead is simply re-clamped higher on the strand as your natural hair grows — and the same extension hair is reused.
  • Weft Extensions: 6–8 weeks between move-up appointments. The weft itself can last 12+ months with proper care.

At Holistic Crowns, Maete provides every client with a personalised maintenance schedule at installation — so you always know exactly when to return for a refresh and what to do between visits to protect your investment.

Maete's insider note: "Clients who follow the at-home care protocol consistently get the upper end of these ranges — and often beyond. The hair's longevity is really in your hands between appointments."

Can the same extension hair be reused at my maintenance appointment?

+

Yes — and this is one of the most significant economic advantages of K-Tip and I-Tip methods over tape-in extensions. For both K-Tip and I-Tip installations, 80–90% of the original extension hair can typically be reused across multiple maintenance cycles, significantly reducing the cost of ongoing wear.

The reusability depends on how well the hair has been cared for during the wear period. Hair that has been consistently conditioned, stored away from excessive heat, and washed with sulfate-free products tends to maintain its quality cycle after cycle.

At your maintenance appointment, Maete inspects every strand individually before deciding which can be reused and which should be replaced — ensuring your seamless blend is never compromised by hair that has reached the end of its optimal wear.

What shortens the life of hair extensions — and how do I avoid it?

+

The most common factors that reduce extension longevity include:

  • Sulfate-containing shampoos: Sulfates break down both the extension's cuticle layer and, in the case of K-Tip extensions, begin to erode the keratin bond. Always use an extension-safe, sulfate-free formula.
  • Sleeping with hair loose: Friction against pillowcase fabric causes tangling at the bond points and accelerates matting. A loose braid or silk bonnet dramatically extends wear time.
  • Applying conditioner or oil directly on bond/bead points: Product buildup at the bond causes slippage. Always apply conditioning products from mid-shaft to ends only.
  • Excessive heat directly at the root: Flat irons and curling wands should never be used within 2cm of the bond or bead. Heat damages the bond's structural integrity and weakens the natural hair at that point.
  • Missing maintenance appointments: As your natural hair grows, bonds migrate down the shaft — increasing the load on individual strands. Regular move-up appointments are not optional; they protect both your extensions and your natural hair.

Swimming &
Active Lifestyle

Can I swim with hair extensions?

+

Yes — both K-Tip and I-Tip extensions installed at Holistic Crowns are water-resistant and safe for swimming. This is one of the most frequently asked questions during consultations, and the answer is a definitive yes — with a few professional precautions.

  • Before swimming: Apply a generous amount of leave-in conditioner or coconut oil to your hair. This creates a barrier that limits the amount of chlorine or saltwater the extension hair absorbs.
  • During swimming: Wearing hair in a loose braid or a protective style prevents excessive tangling during water activity. Avoid rubbing the hair aggressively while wet.
  • After swimming: Rinse thoroughly with clean water immediately after exposure to chlorine or salt water. Follow with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and a hydrating conditioning treatment.
  • Chlorine caution: Regular chlorine exposure can dry out extension hair and, over time, affect K-Tip bond integrity. Protective styling and thorough rinsing minimise this significantly.

Maete's note: "I swim with extensions. The key is preparation before you get in the water, not remediation after."

Can I exercise and sweat with hair extensions?

+

Absolutely — and this is one of the advantages of the professional extension methods practiced at Holistic Crowns over temporary or adhesive-based alternatives. Your K-Tip or I-Tip extensions are designed for the full life you live, including your most intense workouts.

Sweat is the one area where tape-in extensions do face some challenges — as repeated sweat exposure can compromise the adhesive over time. K-Tip and I-Tip methods do not have this limitation, making them Maete's default recommendation for active clients.

After workouts, allow your hair to dry naturally where possible, or use a cool setting on a blow dryer. Avoid pulling or tying extensions too tightly for workouts — use a loose, fabric-covered elastic rather than a tight rubber band to prevent unnecessary tension on the bonds.

Can I use a sauna or hot tub with extensions?

+

Hot tubs and saunas require a little more caution. Steam and high heat can soften K-Tip keratin bonds over extended exposure, potentially causing slippage. Occasional and brief exposure is generally fine — but regular or prolonged hot tub sessions are not recommended for K-Tip wearers.

I-Tip microlink extensions are more tolerant of heat environments, as the micro-bead is not heat-sensitive. If you use saunas or hot tubs frequently, Maete will consider this as part of your method recommendation during consultation — it may influence whether K-Tip or I-Tip is the better choice for your lifestyle.

03

Damage
Prevention

Do hair extensions damage your natural hair?

+

This is the most important question you can ask — and the honest answer is: extensions themselves do not damage hair. Poor installation technique, incorrect method selection, and inadequate aftercare damage hair. The distinction is crucial.

The two most common sources of extension-related damage are:

  • Traction alopecia: Hair loss along the hairline and part caused by extensions placed with too much tension, too much weight, or too close to the follicle. At Holistic Crowns, every bond is placed with a tension-free protocol that distributes weight across the scalp and maintains a safe distance from the root.
  • Mechanical breakage at bond points: Breakage that occurs when extensions are removed incorrectly — pulled or ripped rather than properly dissolved (K-Tip) or released (I-Tip). Maete uses only professional-grade removal methods that never apply force to the natural hair strand.

When installed by a certified specialist using a follicle-safe, tension-free approach — and removed with professional protocol — extensions should leave your natural hair in the same or better condition than it arrived. This is the Holistic Crowns standard.

How do I brush hair extensions without causing damage?

+

Brushing technique is one of the highest-impact daily habits for extension longevity and natural hair protection. Follow these guidelines:

  • Use a loop brush or a soft, extension-safe paddle brush — never a standard round brush near the bonds.
  • Always begin brushing from the ends and work upward in sections, holding the hair at mid-shaft to prevent tugging on the bond point.
  • Never brush wet hair aggressively. Gently detangle with a wide-tooth comb while hair is damp, then allow to dry before full brushing.
  • Brush morning and evening — and loosely braid before sleep to prevent overnight tangling at the bonds.
  • Brush gently around bond areas — never pull through resistance. Resistance indicates a tangle that needs to be worked out gently from below.

Is it safe to colour or bleach hair extensions?

+

Extension hair can be professionally coloured and toned — but this should always be done by a colour specialist experienced with extension hair, never at home. Extension hair behaves differently to natural hair because it no longer receives oils and nutrients from the scalp, making it more porous and more susceptible to damage from chemical processing.

At Holistic Crowns, Maete works only with pre-matched, high-quality Remy hair — meaning most clients do not require colour services on the extension hair itself. For subtle toning or blending, she recommends working with a professional colourist and notifying them that the hair is a K-Tip or I-Tip installation so they can work around the bond points.

Bleaching is possible but requires extreme caution — particularly near bond points where the hair is most vulnerable. This should only ever be undertaken by a professional, and Maete recommends a strand test before any full chemical application.

What products should I use — and avoid — with extensions?

+

Use:

  • Sulfate-free, extension-safe shampoo — applied only to the scalp, not worked through the bonds
  • Hydrating, lightweight leave-in conditioner — applied from mid-shaft to ends only
  • Heat protectant spray — applied before any thermal styling, mid-shaft to ends
  • Dry shampoo — applied to roots between wash days to absorb excess oil without disturbing bonds
  • Nourishing scalp oils — applied directly to the scalp (not the bonds) to maintain follicle health

Avoid:

  • Sulfate-containing shampoos — they erode keratin bonds and strip extension hair of moisture
  • Heavy silicone-based serums directly on bond points — causes slippage over time
  • Dry shampoo or volumising sprays directly on bond areas — excessive buildup weakens adhesion
  • Oil-based products near K-Tip bonds specifically — coconut and argan oil can soften keratin bonds with regular direct application

Choosing Your
Method

What is the difference between K-Tip and I-Tip extensions?

+

Both K-Tip (keratin) and I-Tip (microlink) extensions are individual-strand methods that create the most natural-looking, high-movement results available in the extension world. Their key difference lies in how they attach to your natural hair:

  • K-Tip: A keratin protein tip is heat-fused around a small section of your natural hair using a temperature-controlled tool. No bead is used. The bond is compact, extremely discreet, and sits flush against the hair shaft. Ideal for clients wanting the maximum discretion and the longest wear between maintenance.
  • I-Tip (Microlink): A tiny silicone-lined metal bead is clamped (without heat) around your natural hair with the extension strand inserted through it. No heat touches your hair at any point. Ideal for clients sensitive to heat near the scalp, those who frequently colour their hair, or those who prize maximum movement and body.

Both methods are offered at Holistic Crowns. The best choice for you is determined during your consultation — where Maete assesses your hair's density, porosity, lifestyle, and styling habits before making a personalised recommendation.

How many extension strands do I need for a full, natural result?

+

The number of strands required varies significantly based on your natural hair's current density, the level of volume or length you desire, and the method being used. As a guide:

  • For added length only (fine hair): 80–120 strands for a full, natural result
  • For volume and length (medium density): 120–150 strands
  • For a dramatic, high-volume transformation: 150–200+ strands

These are starting estimates. Maete conducts a thorough density mapping assessment during your consultation and provides an exact strand count recommendation — with the reasoning behind every number, so you understand exactly what your crown requires.

I've had bad experiences with extensions before. Can I still wear them?

+

This is one of the most common conversations Maete has with new clients — and one of the most important. Previous bad experiences with extensions are almost always the result of one or more of the following: incorrect method selection, too much weight applied to fine or fragile hair, bonds placed too close to the scalp, or improper removal. All of these are preventable with the right specialist.

Before Maete installs any extension on a client with a history of extension-related damage, she conducts the Holistic Crowns Scalp Health Protocol — a detailed assessment and restorative treatment that determines whether your natural hair has recovered sufficiently to support safe extension wear, and exactly what conditions need to be met before installation begins.

Many of Holistic Crowns' most loyal clients initially came to Maete after a damaging experience elsewhere. She takes particular care with these clients — and the results speak for themselves.

"I was nervous because of a bad extension experience in the past — but Holistic Crown restored all my trust." — Chloe H., Holistic Crowns Client
